40 Prayers for 40 Days of Lent

Day 1  (Wednesday, February 13, 2013)
Verse:  If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15)
Prayer:  Pray for God to help people gain a heart of compassion for children and recognize their clear need for strong fathers to lovingly lead their families.

Day 2  (Thursday, February 14, 2013)
Verse:  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.  (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
Prayer:  Pray for parents to set an example for their children by stepping up spiritually and loving God with all of their hearts, souls, and strength. Pray for parents to then take the full responsibility for the spiritual training and development of each of their children.

Day 3  (Friday, February 15, 2013)
Verse:  Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4)
Prayer:  Pray for children to learn to honor and obey the leadership of their parents. Pray for dads to be tender and loving to their children and not embitter them or provoke them to anger.

Day 4  (Saturday, February 16, 2013)
Verse:  Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9)
Prayer:  Pray for men to reject passivity and become strong leaders in their homes and not allow the fear of failure, fear of rejection, or the fear of the culture to stop them from doing what God has called them to do.

Day 5  (Sunday, February 17, 2013)
Verse:  He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse. (Malachi 4:6)
Prayer:  Pray for God to turn the hearts of the fathers of this generation away from work, entertainment, and hobbies, and back to their children. Pray for God to turn the hearts of the children back to their fathers.

Day 6  (Monday, February 18, 2013)
Verse:  Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers. (Proverbs 17:6)
Prayer:  Pray that fathers would learn to win, keep, and then shepherd the hearts of their children. Pray that grandfathers would invest time in praying for, mentoring, and blessing their children and grandchildren.

Day 7  (Tuesday, February 19, 2013)
Verses:  Give me your heart, my son, and let your eyes delight in my ways. (Proverbs 23:26)
Listen, my son, and be wise, and direct your heart in the way. (Proverbs 23:19)
Prayer:  Pray for fathers to use their influence to wisely guide and train their sons and daughters in the ways of the Lord.  Pray that their children will learn to guard their hearts, to listen to their parents, and to walk in wisdom.

Day 8  (Wednesday, February 20, 2013)
Verses:  Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)
“Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.” (1 Timothy 4:12)
Prayer:  Pray for this next generation of boys to rise up and act like men and be strong.  Pray for them to set a strong example, discern right from wrong, and to stand against the wrong and harmful influences of our culture.

Day 9  (Thursday, February 21, 2013)
Key Verses:  Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4)
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her. (Ephesians 5:25-26)
For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body.  (Ephesians 5:23)
Prayer:  Pray that men will stop putting their own responsibilities onto their wives or others, but will courageously bear the full weight of what God has called them to do and take seriously their role in their homes. Pray that their wives will support them and encourage them.

Day 10  (Friday, February 22, 2013)
Verse:  For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. (Ephesians 3:14-15)
Prayer:  Pray that men will understand that God created their role as father to represent and introduce the next generation to God as Father. Pray that earthly fathers will not follow wrong patterns in the culture but follow His example in lovingly leading, protecting, and providing for their families.

Day 11  (Saturday, February 23, 2013)
Verse:  Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.  (Ephesians 4:32)
Prayer:  Pray that men would forgive their own dads for any wounds or wrong influences from the past and then begin to set a new example by becoming the dad for their children they wished they’d had.

Day 12  (Sunday, February 24, 2013)
Verse:  We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done. (Psalm 78:4)
Prayer:  Pray that fathers will develop a list of stories from scripture and from their lives of how God has worked in the past and to share them with their children to strengthen their faith.

Day 13  (Monday, February 25, 2013)
Verse:  Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who greatly delights in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Psalm (112:1-2)
Prayer:  Pray that fathers would learn to respect, fear, and take God very seriously in their minds and hearts. Pray that their descendants will then live mightily for the Lord on the earth and also pass on their faith so that following generations will be blessed.

Day 14  (Tuesday, February 26, 2013)
Verse:  How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night. (Psalms 1:1-2)
Prayer:  Pray for men to recognize areas of their lives where they are following foolish counsel and avoid them.  Pray that they would develop a love for God’s Word and begin to read it, study it and meditate on what it says.

Day 15  (Wednesday, February 27, 2013)
Verse:  O LORD, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill?  He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart. He does not slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a reprobate is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; he swears to his own hurt and does not change; he does not put out his money at interest, nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken. (Psalm 15:1-5)
Prayer:  Pray for God to raise up a new generation of men who will walk in integrity, treat others with kindness, keep their promises, and become examples of faithfulness for their families.

Day 16  (Thursday, February 28, 2013)
Verses:  This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. (Joshua 1:8)
Your word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against You. (Psalms 119:11)
Prayer:  Pray for our generation to begin to memorize passages of Scripture so we will be careful to do all God created us to do for Him with our lives.

Day 17  (Friday, March 1, 2013)
Verse:  “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”  (Matthew 7:24-27)
Prayer:  Pray that men and women in our generation will build their homes on the rock of obedience to Christ’s commands so that their families can stand strong during the storms of life.

Day 18  (Saturday, March 2, 2013)
Verse:  Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.  Romans 12:17-21
Prayer:  Pray that men will become chain breakers, forgive their dads, make peace with their enemies, and then leave a strong legacy of faithfulness to their children.

Day 19  (Sunday, March 3, 2013)
Verse:  Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. (Proverbs 4:23)
Prayer:  Pray that men will guard the hearts of their daughters and sons from harmful influences and wrong relationships and help them to give their hearts to the Lord.

Day 20  (Monday, March 4, 2013)
Verses:  For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. (2 Timothy 1:5)
A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. (Acts 16:14-15)
Prayer:  Pray that God gives single moms courage and faith to trust Him with their children. Pray that they will prayerfully and wisely use their influence to help their children to live for Christ.

Day 21  (Tuesday, March 5, 2013)
Verse:  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

Verse:  “The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills …” (Genesis 49:26)
Prayer:  Pray that fathers would learn to verbally affirm and bless their children and then to invest in their children’s future success with their prayers, encouragement, and counsel.

Day 24  (Friday, March 8, 2013)
Verse:  Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. (Philippians 2:3-4)
Prayer:  Pray that fathers would learn to be unselfish at home and rise up to the call of serving and protecting their families. Pray that fathers will esteem their family as more important than themselves and be willing to yield their rights so that they can serve their families as Christ served us.

Day 25  (Saturday, March 9, 2013)
Verses:  He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.  (Proverbs 13:20)
Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
Prayer:  Pray that men will seek friendship and accountability with other strong, Godly men. Ask God to help men to align their lives so that the people who are the closest to them are close to God.

Day 26  (Sunday, March 10, 2013)
Verse:  For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants. Isaiah (44:3)

Day 27  (Monday, March 11, 2013)
Verses:  To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day. (2 Timothy 1:2-3)
You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 2:1-3)
Prayer:  Pray for men to invest time, resources and prayer in fatherless children as Paul invested in Timothy in the Bible. Pray that strong men will reach  to and mentor other younger men in how to walk in integrity, love their wives, and lead their children.

Day 28  (Tuesday, March 12, 2013)
Verse:  For then I will give to the peoples purified lips, that all of them may call on the name of the LORD, to serve Him shoulder to shoulder. (Zephaniah 3:9)
Prayer:  Pray for God to speak to the hearts of the lost that seek the light.

Day 29  (Wednesday, March 13, 2013)
Verse:  Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.… (2 Corinthians 9:10)
Prayer:  Pray that churches, men, and families all over the world would be blessed and impacted by the Holy Spirit.

Day 30  (Thursday, March 14, 2013)
Verse:  “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” (Acts 3:19)

Day 31  (Friday, March 15, 2013)
Verse:  Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:12-13)
Prayer:  Pray that God will help husbands and fathers learn to walk in integrity and continue to resist things that will destroy them or their families.

Day 32  (Saturday, March 16, 2013)
Verse:  But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;  for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.  For the Scripture says, “whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.” (Romans 10:8-11)
Prayer:  Pray that people who don’t have a relationship with God will have their hearts touched, their eyes opened, and faith sparked so that they cry out to God and allow Jesus Christ to become their salvation and strength.

The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (2 Timothy 4:17-18)

Day 39  (Saturday, March 23, 2013)
Verse:  Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. (2 Corinthians 9:13-14)
Prayer:  Pray that ministries and the body of Christ around the world will be more unified, blessed, fruitful, and effective because of how God uses fathers in the days ahead.
